Expungement (after charges are dropped or the defendant is acquitted) removes records from public access entirely, while sealing hides them from most background checks though some agencies retain access. Not all offenses qualify — convictions for many violent, sexual, and drug-manufacturing crimes are excluded. A certificate of eligibility from FDLE is the prerequisite, followed by a court petition.
