Pretrial Diversion
Pretrial diversion (including Pretrial Intervention, or PTI) lets eligible defendants complete conditions like classes, community service, and restitution in exchange for dismissal of the charges. Completion typically permits expungement or sealing afterward. Eligibility varies by state attorney office and offense type — many first-time, non-violent charges qualify, including some DUI and theft cases. Early entry, before filing decisions, is where defense counsel adds the most value.
