A mandatory minimum sentence is the lowest prison term a judge must impose on conviction for certain offenses — most famously 10-20-Life for firearms, drug trafficking minimums by weight category, and DUI enhancements. Judges cannot go below the floor except through specific statutory safety valves or a substantial-assistance motion from the State. This is why charge negotiation before trial is so consequential: the defense goal is often the offense that carries no mandatory minimum.
