Florida's 10-20-Life statute (§ 775.087) imposes mandatory minimum prison terms when a firearm or other weapon is used during certain felonies: 10 years for possessing a firearm, 20 years for discharging it, and 25 years to life for shooting someone. The enhancement applies to dozens of underlying felonies and stacks on top of the base offense score. Defense strategies include challenging whether the weapon was actually possessed or discharged, negotiating charges to non-enhancement offenses, and examining whether the firearm was operable and accessible.
